First Avenue Streetscape

LocationMooloolaba, QLD
ClientSunshine Coast Regional Council

A string of development proposals along First Avenue in Mooloolaba prompted Council to develop an overall streetscape design strategy to facilitate creation of a cohesive pedestrian friendly streetscape. PDG was commissioned to provide landscape design and documentation for this confined streetscape set one block back from Mooloolaba’s popular beach front Esplanade. Key requirements of the design were that it would tie into the character of the Esplanade, encourage and promote retail & street activity and ensure a consistent streetscape palette.

PDG was responsible for design of the streetscape including accessibility requirements, pedestrian friendly pavements, wall finishes, handrails, furniture selection and street lighting which needed to tie in with Council’s street realignment, car parking and drainage design.

Resolution of grade changes at the corner of Smith and First Avenue resulted in the creation of a successful outdoor retail / dining area. The overall result is an upgrading of the character and quality of First Avenue to create a robust streetscape that is attractive to residents, workers and visitors alike.

PDG has been involved in several other developments along First Avenue including, Cilento and Oceans with the entrance to Oceans development featuring a water cascade and fountain with artwork developed in conjunction with Urban Art Projects. This water feature sits near a corner on the street and has been oriented to provide a focal point for the streetscape.
