The decision paves the way for stage one to commence on Yeppoon’s outskirts – including a surf lake and associated facilities, skate park, renewable energy facility, tourist park and short-term accommodation with cabins and camping sites.
Place Design Group have been working with Surf Lakes Holding Ltd and a multidisciplinary team to develop an integrated masterplan, led by Place Design Group Director, Clint Wood, for this active lifestyle destination, while simultaneously leading the planning process to see Central Queensland develop into a premier active tourism and lifestyle hub.
Surf Lakes International, CEO Aaron Trevis said, “Our long-term aim has always been to take our wave making technology to the world, allowing people from all walks of life to be able to experience the joys of a surfing life in a safe environment. We hope the Yeppoon site can be one of, if not the first Surf Lake open to the public“.
As part of the development application, Place Design Group led complex negotiations with the State and Council to secure an agreement for access to the site via a newly constructed access from Yeppoon Road, Mulara.

Leading the planning process has been Place Design Group Associate Planner, Frazer Sandwith. “This is truly a ground-breaking catalyst project for Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast Region. This approval will bring economic growth and employment opportunities direct to residents, who stand to benefit from the boost in tourism. While enabling Surf Lakes to continue their mission to build surfing communities to create a healthier world”.
The surf attraction will be a unique destination in the Capricorn Coast Region and the first of its kind to incorporate a commercial wave pool with the Surf Lakes technology.
