Founded in Queensland, Place Design Group grew quickly across Australia’s eastern seaboard in Brisbane, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Townsville. Having already worked extensively in China, the Philippines and Taiwan, the team took the opportunity early to export those skills and set up offices in China, growing to four offices internationally by 2011.
“In an increasingly global environment, Place Design Group’s strength from the beginning was a hands-on, locally focused, and flexible approach to directly align with our client’s project needs. For us it was about championing our great people; their skills, strengths, and diverse interests, to consistently deliver sustainable and thriving places.
“As a result, the past 20 years has led to the delivery of extraordinary project outcomes, stronger client relationships, and many adventures that explored and engaged us all in new markets. Each challenge and opportunity encouraged us to develop new approaches to our work and ultimately contribute to our growth and the transformation of the communities, regions and cities we work within,” says founding partner and Managing Director, Shaun Munday.
Opportunities have taken project teams to every part of Australia and to international destinations including Malaysia, Vietnam, Fiji, Morocco, Dubai, and New Zealand. These experiences continue across Australia, China, and South East Asia, where the organisation has its sights firmly set.
Place Design Group has expertise across a wide range of sectors including Residential Communities, Hotels and Resorts, Retail and Commercial, Urban Renewal, Planning and Public Policy, Parks and Public Realm, and Health, Aged Care and Education. With this breadth, Place Design Group boast an extensive track record of quality projects that continue to stand the test of time.
Award winning projects, Surfers Paradise Foreshore, Sheraton Dameisha Resort, Brisbane’s Cutters Landing, Intercontinental Hotel Shenzhen, Outrigger Fiji, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Sydney’s Future Street, Stockland’s AURA, Jezzine Barracks Townsville, Thornton Park Penrith, Cross River Rail Brisbane, LCM Shanghai, Townsville Strand, Variety Livvi’s Place Glenfield, Yeppoon Foreshore, and the iconic Domic at Sunshine Beach, are just a few demonstrating that diversity.
As one of the few Australian planning and design firms with broad international experience and still headquartered in Queensland, the next 20 years present a unique opportunity. With the forecast growth of interstate and international migration, already surging investment, and now the world’s focus on the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, Place Design Group is in an enviable position. It is set to capitalise on its local team’s engagement and wider regional collaboration to take their clients to the next level throughout Australia and across the Asia Pacific region.
Chief Executive Officer, Beth Toon says, “we take great pride in the local connection we have established in our communities. This has really enabled us to develop as a group that is open to new ideas and approaches, grow as they grow, assisting us to quickly adapt to different situations and opportunities. It is exciting to see the innovation and drive that is coming out of a time of challenge, and how this will shape not only our teams but our many extraordinary partners, clients, and the communities we have the privilege of working with.“
Whilst so much has been achieved, Place Design Group always have one eye to the future. Their team’s passion and focus to push the boundaries and strive to achieve the remarkable is sure to hold them in good stead as they take on their next 20 years of creating great places.
