The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects has announced the winners of the 2021 AILA QLD Landscape Architecture Awards.
The design of a verdant pocket park under a Brisbane railway bridge by RPS received the Award of Excellence in the Civic Landscape category. The jury said the project is an exemplar of urban transformation.
“The project celebrates [the city’s] subtropical climate and sets a new benchmark for adaptive reuse, innovation and tactical urbanism for many of the ‘lost spaces’ throughout rapidly developing suburbs and within our CBD.”
Elsewhere in the awards, Lat27’s upgrade of Kingsford Smith Drive took out the Award of Excellence in the Infrastructure category and was lauded by the jury as “an example of designers and key stakeholders working together for the best possible outcome.” Lucent by Form Landscape Architecture received the top honour in the Gardens section, with the jury citing the project as an aspirational model for sustainable housing.
In total, 33 honours were handed out across the program’s 14 categories, selected from 81 entries. Projects awarded at the state and territory level will advance to the National Landscape Architecture Awards to be announced in October.
This year’s AILA QLD Landscape Architecture Awards jury comprised Lauren Newton (jury chair), Debra Bela, Jim Carless, Sophie Fossey, Michael Lavery, Julia McCann and Paul Morris.
