Sister Cities Celebrate 25 Year Connection at Iconic Hotel

The Brisbane Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk and Place Design Group Managing Director, Shaun Munday marked the 25th anniversary of the Brisbane – Shenzhen sister city relationship today at the InterContinental Shenzhen.

Over the past week, the Lord Mayor’s Business Mission has visited South Korea and China, spending the final two days of the mission experiencing the InterContinental Shenzhen, a hotel whose reinvention project over 10 years ago reflects the essence of sister city relationships.

Presenting a plaque to InterContinental Shenzhen General Manager Mr. Daniel Arbenz and recognising OCT Hospitality Property with a signed certificate, the Brisbane Lord Mayor and Shaun Munday acknowledged the connection between sister city businesses established through the reinvention of this famous hotel over 10 years ago.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Brisbane and Shenzhen had benefitted from a prosperous Sister City relationship since 1992, and was pleased to see Brisbane company Place Design Group making their mark in Shenzhen.

“It’s an honour to complete the Lord Mayor’s Business Mission at the InterContinental Shenzhen, reinvented by businesses Place Design Group and OCT Hospitality Property,” Cr Quirk said.

“To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Brisbane’s Sister City relationship with Shenzhen in hotel designed by a Brisbane company is a true symbol of the strong connection between our two cities.”

Place Design Group Managing Director, Shaun Munday said it’s been fantastic for the Lord Mayor’s Business Mission to experience the last two days at a project that highlights Place Design Group’s high quality, international work on a global scale.

Originating in Australia and with three offices located in China, Place Design Group partnered with OCT Hospitality Property on the reinvention of the InterContinental Shenzhen, commencing design in 2004 with the hotel opening in December 2006.

Place Design Group Director, Andrew Comer was the lead concept designer on the project and said ultimately the hotel was designed by a team of people all passionate about design and luxury hotels. “Considering the size and very high quality that was achieved in such a relatively short timeframe for a project of this complexity , this project assisted in profiling Place Design Group’s superior planning and design work in Shenzhen, and also across China.”

Fast-forward now to 2017 and the relationships established through this significant project are still as strong as ever with Place Design Group and OCT Hospitality Property partnering on the recently completed JW Marriott Shenzhen Bao’an – a high end hotel in a new district near Shenzhen airport.

With other significant Place Design Group projects in Shenzhen including, Sheraton Dameisha Resort, Portofino the Riveria, Mont Orchid Riverlet and The MixC, the connection between Brisbane and Shenzhen as sister cities is as strong as ever.
