Exciting new recreation choices and experiences right in the heart of our city – that’s the tremendous opportunity that Place Design Group’s vision for Victoria Park will offer Brisbane residents and visitors.
In early June, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced a new plan to transform Victoria Park Golf Course into the city’s biggest public parkland in 50 years.
This presents a once in a generation opportunity to enhance Brisbane’s lifestyle offerings, protect strategically located green space and create a uniquely Brisbane legacy.
“The first step in making this vision a reality will be to consult with the community,” Cr Schrinner said.
Place Design Group were invited by Brisbane City Council to contribute a visionary idea for the future parkland as part of their broader visioning and community engagement process.
Drawing inspiration from our regional landscape character and taking best advantage of the undulating landform of Victoria Park, The Brisbane Rock Pools was conceived as an exciting parkland idea.
Located in a major gully at the heart of the park, the Brisbane Rock Pools re-introduces a chain-of-ponds that was once present where the Inner City Bypass is today and re-imagines a sub-tropical rock pool setting as a dynamic playscape for families and people of all ages to enjoy.
Connected by shaded gully walks and hilltop bridges that offer expansive city views, The Brisbane Rock Pools will complement a wide choice of other parkland activities and experiences, which could include settings and venues for urban art, live music, adventure play and sport as well as retaining the existing golf driving range and reception venues.
Place Design Group Design Principal, Shaun Egan, is well versed in the strategic importance of public parklands and says this opportunity has come at an exciting time of unprecedented change across Brisbane city.
“The parkland will offer our city the brightest, most catalytic opportunity to enhance and promote our quintessential Brisbane lifestyle qualities, but to also take them to a whole new, game-changing level in the inner-city,” says Mr Egan.
Council has allocated $1 million in 2019-20 for community consultation and design for the new park, with work due to begin in 2021.
