Jezzine Barracks North Queensland

Place Design Group successfully blended the history of the site into one large storybook design, whilst also providing a myriad of recreational opportunities for visitors and the local community.

Previously home to 31st Battalion (nee Kennedy Regiment) for over 120 years, and home of the local traditional owner clans before them, the 15 hectare site has been transformed into a public parkland which includes flowing paths between the various lookouts with views over the ocean to Magnetic Island, up to the Palm Group of islands and back over Townsville to The Pinnacles and ranges to the west.

Located at the northern end of the Strand beachfront, Jezzine Barracks is an important development for Townsville. With joint funding from the Commonwealth of Australia, Queensland Government and Townsville City Council, the project plays a pivotal role in our tourism growth and historic remembrance for the area. north of Townsville’s CBD and The Strand precincts that was previously home of the local traditional owner clans, the Bindal and Wulgurukaba people, and then used by the Defence Force as their barracks for over 120 years.

The multi award winning project design features an amphitheatre, recreational facilities, coastal boardwalk, bridges, and all abilities pedestrian paths and is extensively used for recreational pursuits by the local community and, with its extensive interpretive plaques and artworks, acts as a significant tourist drawcard for locals and visitors alike.

The historical Kissing Point Fort was left intact with gentle architectural embellishments allowing greater all abilities access to gun emplacements and associated structures. The fort setting provides not only a wealth of interpretive elements but also a magnificent vantage point to enjoy the surrounding vistas. The stories of battles won and lost as well as the creation story are relayed through interpretive art pieces that allow the public to interact with the historic site and have a sense of what it was like to be there in times past.
