The Cathedral School
North Queensland, QLD, Australia
The facility showcases a range of flexible spaces to suit the school’s hands-on, minds-on active learning style, while incorporating a range of diverse outdoor zones that offer flexibility, accessibility and inclusivity.
Macarthur Anglican School expanded their specialist learning facilities with the addition of the ‘Warren Integrated Studies HUB’. Designed by Mayoh Architects, the building’s radial, split level design revolves around a central ‘collaboration’ courtyard. Its strong circular geometry resonate within the landscape, where a series of circular arrays are repeated outwards from the central focal point. Responding to the brief we ensured seamless integration of the built form to the outdoor learning spaces and the surrounding semi-rural landscape.
Responding to changes in the school’s educational program that accommodate different learning styles and activities, Macarthur Anglican School’s Warren Integrated Studies Hub facility reflects the evolving needs of contemporary education. Recognising the proven benefits of outdoor learning, the spaces have been designed to offer flexible, nurturing, dynamic environments that accommodate a variety of learning and social activities.
These spaces encourage hands-on exploration, connectivity, critical thinking, and creativity, allowing students to engage with their surroundings in a meaningful way. Each learning space has views of the landscape and access to outdoor learning spaces. The open-ended nature of the design lets students connect with the natural environment, whilst interpreting and using the space dynamically, fostering independence and collaboration.
Our strategy was to design a space that was functional, flexible, and inclusive. A space that would provide multiple opportunities for group gathering and facilitating learning, play, rest, and relaxation. It was important that internal classrooms had views to this courtyard, the design also addressed comfort of the users and provided sense of inclusion within the outdoor environment.
