The preservation of Wollongong Harbour is important to the region due to its long history of commercial maritime industrial activity, along with its ongoing popularity with locals for active and passive recreational activities and events.

Place Design Group was engaged by The New South Wales Department of Industry to develop a master plan that will give this working harbour new life and a new direction whilst preserving its state significant heritage value. Through Place Design Group’s combined expertise in urban design and strategic communications, the project scope was expanded from just the working harbor and IN4 zoning of Crown land to include the entire harbour precinct, and to provide public domain guidelines to ensure the harbour is fully integrated with Council’s coastal public domain strategy.

The master plan explores a range of alternative futures that maintain the heritage values and activity of the harbour.
